In my younger years in California there were several large forest fires that came very close to where I lived. In one instance it came to within 1/2 mile and required everybody in our immediate community (maybe 25 families) watching and patrolling the area behind the bulldozed fire break. A forest fire that crowns in a conifer forest is a scary entity. It creates its own weather and wind with a voice that talks with startling clarity and force to a young man patrolling the fire line at 4 AM. Bass
