Mendoland fire excitement.

Of all the fires started by the lightening storm, a week ago friday, there are still many remote ones still burning. Relative to us there are two large ones that have converged (about 5 miles distant) and there is a concentrated county and state effort to knock it down. All day today I could hear, and often see, helicopter and twin propjet plane engines passing over to drop water on the fire. There were both single and double rotor helicopters overhead towing large balls of water on a long cable.
More exciting was a small fire yesterday that started up just across the main road from our property about 2 miles away. We still haven't learned whether this was a lightning fire that was just smoldering and flared up, or a new fire. The interesting part was watching several helicopters dump water and completely quench the fire within one hour. Like much of our area there are few access roads and very steep terrain, so getting fire crews and tractors in is a problem.
We don't (yet) really feel threatened, but some folks are actually in danger of loosing their homes and have been told to evacuate. Air quality is very bad.
