I'm not really sure how I would explain the difference between pre-k & kindergarten if that's what you were asking.
I think my education was similar to yours; I started at three (almost four) but I had a year of preschool, a year of pre-k, and a year of kindergarten (full day, five days a week). Come to think of it, mine was private as well. I did start first grade at 6 which was was pretty common and I was actually a little older than some of the other kids because of the arbitrary birthday cutoff (if you turned 3 after October first you started school the next year & my birthday was two weeks after the cutoff).
