I feel sympathy for people who appear to be incapable of making their way, even when it seems obvious to me what their proper course is, even when I think that what they do is very bad, and even when I am condemning their behavior.
You feel sympathy for the "poor kid." What if you saw the kid, 20 years from now, doing the same thing as his mother? Would your sympathy go away?
