I was put into school in England (a "private" school where I was a day student, not a "boarder") at age three by my mother, who basically couldn't wait to get rid of me. (I recently threw out my "old school tie" from the uniform I wore.) So scared I peed my panties the first day. When we got to Canada, she fought a nasty (on her part) battle to put me into an advanced grade of elementary school because I'd been to school in England. I wanted to stay where I was. Crayons were great! I thought I'd lose my crayons if I got jumped some grades. They were something we never saw in England at the time.

Sadly, for some reasons which I understand, and some that I either don't understand or don't agree with, many kids are being raised, to some degree, by hired caregivers. My mother was the only working mother in a two-parent family with a working father where I grew up. And from age eight, there was no daycare/babysitter for me. I was on my own after school and during the summer months. I was an only child, so there was no older sibling to keep an eye on me.

OTOH, my brother-in-law and his wife agreed, before the birth of their first child, that she would stay at home until the kids entered Grade 8 (beginning of high school here.) It took some doing, there were hardships (I helped out sometimes with things like new winter coats for the kids--in that extended family, it's a usual thing to help out with hand-me-downs and in other ways, with kids other than your own, and I had none anyway, so I chipped in.) And yet, without a working wife, my brother-in-law managed to pay off his mortgage before he was forty. And he never occupied a big corner office, he worked in a sawmill.

My upbringing is not something I would have wished on a child, if I'd ever had one.

It's interesting that CNN is running a series of spots right now, in a declining and increasingly expensive society, on how to cut back on the cost of living. And reporting that some people are cutting off their gym memberships, and weight loss companies like Jenny Craig are reporting declining revenues.

It's amazing what you can live without, if you have to.
