First of all, I don't have children. Does that disqualify me from the right to share my opinion on the subject? As society members, we all have a stake in how children are raised because the way they turn out affects us all.
Secondly, my parents didn't really teach me much of anything, which is partly my point.
Thirdly, I think it is a mistake to think that everyone learns all they need to know from their own family. Just look at how many dysfunctional families and abused children there are in our society, and you know why that's a bad idea. In fact, one reason that abuse is perpetuated is because it carries forward from one generation to the next. When children see abuse as their only model, they tend to follow it themselves.
My statement stands: Parenting is one of the most important jobs most people will ever have, and they should be given the BEST training possible, for the sake of society.
