Subject    This is what worked for me

I used to have occasional moderate bouts of sciatica pain that I treated with alternating heat and ice packs (20 minutes each, 4 or 5 times a day) and regular doses of Advil to reduce swelling and inflammation. However, none of that was of much help when I had a severe episode last year. After 3 weeks of agonizing pain, I saw an orthopedic physician and surgeon, who ordered x-rays and an MRI that reveled degenerative disc disease (arthritis) as the cause. My doc treated me with a lumbar epidural injection of cortisone, done on an outpatient basis in his surgical suite. It made ALL the difference in terms of relieving my pain. Some patients need as many as 3 injections given 2 weeks apart, but I was MUCH better after just one.

I still get minor lower back and leg pain from time to time, but it's easily relieved with Advil. Once in a while I also take a muscle relaxer, although my ortho doc says "they're as useless as a chiropractor".
