Then I'm sure you recognized that the two young women pictured with the eminent Ms. Baez in that odd 1968 artifact were her sisters Pauline and Mimi (the latter also a singer, who later married the folksinger/writer/raconteur Richard Farina) -- and that the poster's whole point was a ham-fisted attempt at shifting the prime young (American) male object of desire for their female peers (note the implied heteronormativity as well, alas) from the brave armed-forces member to the principled (not "chicken"!) draft resister.

> Staying entirely out of the political arena, because I would feel this way no matter which way the poster was slanted, I think it is derivative and demeaning. It's not original--it's really rather trite.

Frankly, I also don't care for either poster, even taken in terms of being a product of its respective time -- though (pace Santayana's warning re being ignorant of history; vide infra) I'm more than well aware of the valid parallels between 1968 and 2008 in American politics and public life.

> But since I remember the original, I'm obviously not a target demographic, so I *would* think it's trite.

Indeed, friend Nostradama -- and, FWIW, when, oh when, will identity politics and personality cult fade from the forefront, to be replaced by issues and substance in the present race? (Yeah, I thought so: as Leo Kottke once memorably titled an instrumental, "When Shrimp Learn to Whistle." ?;-) )

> I object to the use of the word "girl." That's also a result of having been in my twenties in the sixties. If you're going to be trite and derivative, at least manage to use the word "woman," I figure. A female old enough to make sexual choices and preferences public is old enough to be called a woman.

Indeed -- and perhaps it's my last gay nerve being worked here, but doesn't "boy" also rankle, for the same reason? After all, if one is old enough to be asked to sacrifice one's life for one's country, however dubious the cause, one is surely old enough to make informed sexual and political decisions...or so (this) one would think. But surely you've also noted the breathlessly-documented phenomenon of the "Obama Girl" video (never "Woman" there, of course) -- which, truth to tell, before I saw same I first thought had to have had something to do with either of the Senator's prepubescent daughters (and after seeing same considered the young woman in the video to be clearly an adult)...but, then, I suppose I'm just too PC for words sometimes. ?;-)

>As for the Lysistrata reference--yep, I guess it's true. Those who forget the past are condemned to relive it. (Yes, I know I've warped the quote!)

No matter: as I alluded above, George Santayana's great line actually runs "Those who are ignorant of the past are condemned to repeat it, and ignorance becomes perpetual [emphasis mine]." By the same token, those aware of the kitsch of the past tend to recycle same...?;-)

Yours for hysterical raisins,
