If you can figure out a way to give positive reinforcement to a dog for not barking while you are away, you are a much better man than I.
I have used a radio controlled shock collar to work with my pup, Grant, prior to Sherman. I always checked the shock level on myself before using it on Grant, and he always wagged his tail when I turned it on. This worked out though, because Grant would always come home, or come back to me when I turned on the collar. I think he was very insensitive to the shock and thought of it as a HEY GRANT? Wag.
