sometimes things aren't quite what you might believe they are in Canada.

In the period between 1968 to 1970, in Penticton, BC, the house in which my ex and I were living was searched by the RCMP without benefit of a warrant. There were apologies later: "We got the house number wrong. We thought there was a prowler in the house." Bullshit--my ex was out, and I was home alone, with lights on. When the knock on the door came, I opened right up. Thought it was a female friend whom I was expecting. But I suspect the apology wouldn't have been forthcoming, except for the fact that my ex's uncle was the local MLA and he raised a stink (state senator, for our American friends.) The truth is, they were looking for a friend of my ex's, on a minor marijuana charge. God, they wouldn't shift their cars out of the Tim Horton's parking lot for that anymore, and we all know it. And why should they? But it was a big deal then.

And, yes, you're probably in a data base. Even in the 1980s, the RCMP was operating with a primitive data base available through their patrol cars. Much more sophisticated now, and linked in with the American NCISYS (I think that's what's it's called.) When they brought it in and were learning the system, a friend of mine in the RCMP ran me through the system. Warned me that I was an "R" which indicated that I had a record (not a criminal record, just that I'd been through the system.) The system didn't differentiate between "axe murderer" and "We once asked her some questions and filled out a form." What they would do was, on a traffic stop, run the plate number, and wait for a return on their check. So, since I was an "R" which indicated I had a record, they would approach my vehicle more carefully than they would if I weren't. He told me that if I was ever pulled over, to put my hands on the top of the steering wheel and not move, so that it was obvious to the officer that I wasn't in the process of reaching for a weapon, etc.

And how did I get that? Took part in a human rights demonstration in Vancouver, BC in 1963, got arrested, threatened by Vancouver Police Department with the possibility of a charge of "obstructing a police officer in the conduct of his duties." Thrown in cells for a bit, released without charge. All because a restaurant on Granville Street had been reluctant to serve one of my girlfriends, a native Canadian, also in university. We grew up together. I rallied a few friends and we went down and demonstrated in front of the place.

Believe me, it can happen. Nothing we have is private any more, and things can happen to us that the law says "can't" and "shouldn't." But they do.
