I know how it fits in. My experience has been that the squeaky wheel gets treated as the enemy and things get worse when you complain. I’ve noticed that the more categories of white, male, and middle class that one fits in, the more likely people will react to criticism with deference and fear. The less one fits into that mode, the more likely it is that people will decide they can get away with blowing you off. They’ll probably take out some built-up resentment over the people they don’t have the balls to stand up to out on you too on top of it.
My mom is notoriously tenacious and if you think I can get righteously pissed, you ought to meet her! And unlike me, she is actually above reproach. She never lets anything slide and, yet, it usually makes things worse.
