I agree with Christina that it depends on the attitude of the employee I have to deal with.

I have a habit of making sure that food I'm purchasing is good (not expired, not moldy, ect) because several local stores have been in the habit of marking expired food down and not taking it off the shelves (which I've pretty sure isn't legal).

So, if while I'm shopping I come across something that's out of date it's just easier to bring it to the register with me and tell the cashier what's wrong with it (it seems much easier than telling them that I noticed a can of soup that was out of date that they would then have to go look for).

I've had several different responses; most places are like thanks for pointing it out & bringing it up, & that they'll check to see if anything else is expired. Then I won't make a complaint; chances are that someone just didn't restock properly or check the dates all that well.

But on a couple of occasions I've been told "yeah, we know; that's why it's marked down" if after explaining that the point of sales isn't to get rid of potentially bad food and they don't seem to grasp the concept I might say something to the manager. Just a few days ago that happened and the guy's response was "so does that mean you don't want it?" & I was in a bit of a smartass mood so I said "Of course I want creamy soup that expired in May, I haven't had food poisoning lately" and he started to ring it up. Then I did tell him to find the store manager. His response was as expected; they marked down because it was going to expire soon, they hadn't realized anything already had expired, thanked me for bringing ot up and said that they'd be double-checking the shelf I found it on as it wasn't legal to sell expired food.

As far as airlines go; I'm surprised that you were compensated as well as you were. My parents have had first class flights that had connections that were delayed to the point that they had to spend the night in the airport & all they got were a couple of t-shirts & toothbrushes. I personally think that in those cases the airline should provide lodging for the people for the night.
