For example, when checking into hotels I leave a tip for the room cleaning people on the first day, explaining that I tip "before" and not after. It's worked every time--I get excellent service (and usually more soap, shower gel, lotion, shampoo and conditioner than I can ever use.) So I don't usually have anything to complain about. I know that a lot of my friends don't tip hotel cleaning people, but my attitude is that they're making lousy money, they're mostly immigrants who don't speak our language well, they need all the help they can get. People sure helped me when I was an immigrant, so I'm just paying it back.

Once or twice a week, if I've had really good service somewhere (restaurant, store, a particular taxi driver) I will call or e-mail the company to tell them that I've had good service. (Of course, I'm so old now that I'm "cute" and generally get really good service.)

And I complain, too. Don't rant. Just explain my beef.

Did that once after particularly lousy service from Horizon Air, subsidiary of Alaska Airlines, where I was a frequent flyer, and they knew it. They sent me a voucher for a free flight. Sent it back with a note that I wouldn't ever use it, their service was so bad. Probably cutting off my nose to spite my face (but it wasn't that much money, short flight, Vancouver to Seattle) but the whole incident I was complaining about was just beyond belief.

I don't have to complain very often, but when the situation arises, yes, I do.
