I'm one who doesn't want any services and I REALLY don't want to be decorated with cosmetics, filled with preservatives and put on display as a stiff. I am not telling them they don't need to see me dead... I'm telling them I DON'T WANT to be viewed dead.
If they decide to throw a party later, I've included funds in my will to pay for the blow-out. And I've a hope that the party will see more laughing than sorrow.
But to spend a fortune on services, a casket and the doo-dahs inside that I'll never feel and to pay rent for a hole in the ground surrounded by decaying neighbors makes absolutely no sense to me.
If my last bit of corporeal decision-making is to ensure that my remains are dealt with as I see fit, where is the selfishness? It's MY body, or it was at one time... and it's selfish of me to determine how I want it dealt with? From my perspective, those who choose to ignore my final instructions would be on the far side of self-righteous to demand their desires take precedence over mine.
My mother's wishes were to have no services and to have her ashes scattered in the shade garden she planted in her home six hours north of here. I saw no problem with that, since it was what she WANTED. Who was I to decide that my wishes as one of her survivors should take precedence over her desires as she approached her end. This would, to me, be the ultimate in dis-respect.
