Subject    Funerals "are for the living"

In one sentence you say that funerals are for the living, and in your final sentence you say you have written into your will that you want the same as your parents wanted.

"My parents both insisted on absolutely minimal postmortem proceedings with no funeral and no ceremony. Of course I honored their wishes. My wife and I have written the same sort of thing into our wills."

If the funeral is for the living, as you say, then why not let the living decide what they need to be able to deal with your death?

I think it's the height of selfishness that people don't allow their family to use the wake and funeral process to cope with THEIR loss. Why do you care if they decide they need a get-together to find comfort? I find the idea of just dumping my mother in a hole, without celebrating her life as we knew it, to be a distasteful ending to the mother I love so much. It's simply not up to her.
