I can't agree with you more. Funerals are for the living, not the dead, and you did exactly the right thing in visiting her before she died. I'm all for memorial services honoring the dead, but I have little use for funerals in which the guest of honor is the one person who can't enjoy his/her status. My parents both insisted on absolutely minimal postmortem proceedings with no funeral and no ceremony. My mother would have been pleased that her corneas were used for a transplant to help a blind person see again. Of course I honored their wishes. My wife and I have written the same sort of thing into our wills.
