When I was a kid, I probably went to more funerals than weddings (there were a throng of elderly friends and family in my parents' social circle). While it was pretty unlikely for me to weasel out of these functions, I hated them and resented going (that I missed the actual graveside interment of one of my favorite "adopted grandmothers" due to a flat tire as we were driving in the funeral motorcade to the cemetery suggests that all the hullaballoo is nonsense). Maybe because one of our family's big recreational things was "visiting" on the weekends (which was boring for me as a rule, but meant that I interacted a lot with these people while they were alive) made me resent the funerals -- why did we have to be part of a ceremony which held no value to the "guest of honor," when we'd been with them while they were alive and able to interact with us?
Eh, anyway.
Condolences to your family, shewolf. That you took the time to see your mother-in-law while she was alive and could appreciate and enjoy your company is the Most Important Thing.
