I think they're somewhat similar

The way that I envision it, "religion" is a formalized, doctrinaire, set of beliefs, whereas the term "spirituality" implies that there is "something out there" that has qualities that are beyond what we can scientifically measure (one example being the notion that we can influence the structure of water molecules with our thoughts).
Some people feel that "string theory" and "quantum mechanics"--although scientific in their nature--have elements in them that could be interpreted as confirming some elements of "New Age"-type spirituality.
I haven't read the other posts yet, but I'm inferring that some posters may have written that they feel that spirituality and religion are necessary elements in an ability to know what's right and wrong. However, I feel that morality doesn't require religion to have validity. We all need a "social contract" in order to live with others, and the "social contract" does not require an implied threat of punishment from some "Karmic system" or from an authoritarian "God" in order to give it credibility. IOW, I feel that moral behavior can be practical/pragmatic in its nature.
IMO, organized religion is a tool that's used by "authority" for the purpose of controlling "the masses." Politics is used in a similar manner. (When I blog about either system, I often call it "religio-politics.")
