Dell, and other manufacturers, are selling PCs with Ubuntu installed. If all you are doing is browsing and using email, this is solution to seriously consider. Earlier this week, Dell announced a tiny notebook called the Mini 9 that is $349. I am thinking seriously about buying one, mainly for travel. I am on the road a lot and this one weighs two pounds. You can also do what a friend of mine did: he bought a new Compaq with Vista and had a lot of problems with it. He downloaded Ubuntu, burned it to a CD and then partitioned his hard drive and installed Ubuntu as the OS. He uses Firefox and Thunderbird, Star Office and a few other things to fill out the card.
