Re: Being Spiritual vs Being Religious
|
| |
Perhaps being spiritual but not necessarily believing in God can be equated with being ethical -- "doing the right thing," whether it's treating everyone with respect, helping others have a good, safe, healthy life (humans, animals, the plant), and treating yourself with respect (taking care of your body, not abusing it overly with alcohol or food or unnecessary dangers). Yes, I think one can be very spiritual without introducing a religious element into it. "Good pagans" like the Greek philosophers were those who lived and taught ethical lifestyles--just being "good for goodness' sake," doing the right thing because it's the right thing rather than doing it out of fear of punishment or other repercussions -were once conscripted to the Catholic idea of Limbo (along with "good Jews" like Moses, and unbaptized babies) because it didn't seem fair the churchmen of that time that "good" people who hadn't been able to be baptized, either by early death or pre-dating the presence of Christ on earth, should be condemned. Still a darn good policy, I'd say!
