Wow! Didn't know that, but . . .

there seem to be a lot of benefits available in Washington state that were unknown to me. Like groceries with a label attached to the shelf in the market, indicating that the item qualifies under a state food program for low income people. Covers a lot of staples. When I asked about it, I was told that it entitled qualified people to a big discount on those items. And we don't have food stamps here. Or Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Very, very little low-income housing. Where I live, for example, with a population of about 100,000 there are perhaps 400 low-income housing units, many occupied by the disabled, in a community that includes an area which is the the second poorest in the country. If you throw children into the mix, because it is a family-type neighbourhood, not skid row, it *is* the poorest in the country. I'd estimate that there might be 100 family-sized low-income housing units.
But on the other hand, once your unemployment insurance runs out, then you're supposed to exhaust every other financial resource, including maxing out your credit cards, and then you qualify for welfare. But that doesn't necessarily cover things like glasses, dental care, etc. for kids or anyone in the family. Hence my "begging bowl" approach while working. And depending on the level of welfare you're receiving, prescriptions may or may not be paid for in part.
