The way the government works the stats here . . .

is that once your unemployment benefits run out (usually one year, *might* be longer if you live in what they classify as a deprived area) you're taken off the unemployed list and go on the welfare list, which they don't publish. So the unemployment percentage may fall. But from experience in Washington state (don't know about others) there are way more benefits for the unemployed and underemployed there than there are here in my part of Canada. Our unemployment benefits are way lower. And *we're* supposed to be the country with the social safety net!
Our minimum wage may be way higher, but the cost of living is, on average, higher here, in my experience. But people's expectations here of what they're entitled to have as a life style or standard of living is lower, too.
For example, on $8 an hour, our minimum wage, there's no way you could afford anything except shared accommodation, multi "roomies," etc. A "beater" car, if any at all.
