If anything, 911 has caused rapid erosion of civil liberties. Since 911, you can expect that you will be given a third degree or at least being belittle when you travel. Your private property, laptop, cellphone, blackberry, ipod, etc, may be confiscated without probable cause when you are traveling. You may get yourself in trouble due to guilt by association, ie: having Middle Eastern friends. Everybody is now more suspicious with each other. Your neighbor may be an informant, secretly spying on you for the government, similar to those who worked for the Stasi.
After 911, you will find a million good reasons not to travel or not to communicate with others who are either suspected terrorist or suspected spies working for government.
