As a former waiter, I find your response lacking an important insight into the behavior of wait staff: the simple desire to do a good job. I never thought about the tip since I had no way of knowing in advance, unless it was a repeat customer, how well my service would be regarded. I tried to be nice to everyone and learned how to anticipate needs.
Good training for dealing with women....grin.
