Well, I dunno if it is a legend or not, but the fact it was part of a movie in which a Hispanic child died (or at least they thought she did), I have to wonder if there isn't at least a bit of truth to the "memorializing the dead" aspect of it. Unless, of course, unless the writer, director, and factfinders of the movie just *assumed* it was a tradition and didn't check into it.
