...the requirements for being able to carry a concealed handgun--as opposed to just buying one--are more stringent. You must take 12 hours of coursework and live fire instruction. This includes an overview of the legalities of self-defense with lethal force. Your application to the sheriff's office includes fingerprinting and a thorough background check. The permit includes your photo and must be carried whenever you are armed, either on your person or in, e.g., the glovebox of your car. An armed person must *immediately* inform the officer if he/she is stopped or approached by the police for any official reason, e.g., traffic stop. The officer may, at his/her discretion, secure the weapon until official business is concluded.
The first time I was pulled over while carrying (in glove box), I was very nervous, as you never know how individual cops will react. As recommended, I kept my hands in view, informed promptly, and was polite. The cop, in turn, was cool and professional and expressed appreciation for informing him promptly. Of course, it's a misdemeanor if you don't (used to be a felony) and, anyway, it pops up on their computer when they run your plate.
Ohio's concealed carry law is only four years old and close to 100,000 residents have obtained a permit to carry.
NONE of the dire predictions of the anti-gunners came true, once again demonstrating that allowing law-abiding citizens to own and carry firearms isn't something to be feared. Gun bans don't make communities safe. As I've pointed out before, it was virtually impossible to legally own a firearm in Washington DC (until Heller) for decades, yet it had one of the highest violent crime rates in the country. Criminals will *always* get guns, just as they always will get drugs or any other contraband. Politicians find it easier to ban guns than to effectively ban violent criminals.
