My point was that the long (5 second) delay described by lpdcac is not due to distance, which can only account for slightly more than a quarter second. Thanks for the explanation for the rest of the delay.
For me, the most irritating of these types of delays is when trying to talk to someone in real time via internet or satellite phone. The delay in internet conversations that are also transmitted by satellite can be really long, but this involves a lot of signal processing, packet shuffling, plus the quarter second transmission time.
