I've had a digital cable signal in Fairfax County for some years now. My old TV worked with the digital box and the main difference was that with digital service I could get information on the screen about what was showing and I could look at a long list of show information using the "Guide" button on the remote. This let me scroll through all the channels to see what else is on now. If you have a digital-ready TV, you don't necessarily need the cable box since the TV can take input from the coaxial cable connection. In my case, both of my sets were older and I had to have the channel box from the cable company.

In order to get HD television to work, you must have an HD set and an HD cable box. An HD signal is digital, but it is also provides much more data to the television set. An HD DVD contains about four times as much data as a DVD that is not high def. I notice a lot more glitches and momentary interruptions on my high def channels than on the regular ones. I especially have pixelation and even black screens on Showtime and I have no idea why this happens. I have read that HD is susceptible to these kinds of interuptions much more than the normal HD signal. This apparently is a function of the data stream being so much bigger and vulnerable to tiny variations in signal strength.

All that being said, HD television is worth the extra cost, imho. HD movies are fantastic, especially with Dolby surround sound and sports are suddenly worth watching. I loved the NCAA basketball tournament and have found myself watching the NBA playoffs and I have not watched the NBA for years. Hockey is unwatchable on regular TV, but in HD you can see the puck.

The NASA series currently on Discovery has some amazing film of the space race going back to 1961. Discovery, as a matter of course, has some great images on many of their offerings.

HD is television as we've always wanted it to look and is worth the cost to get it going if you like movies and music.
