My parents doted on me and did everything they could to make my childhood a good one, but I was profoundly unhappy, in part because (with the best will) they made me miserable.
So when I got to my early teens I decided to take my life into my own hands. It was a long and sometimes difficult path, but I went from an unhappy childhood to a long and fulfilled and very happy adulthood.
Maybe you could take that as an example.
