Best advice your parents ever gave you?

What was it?
Yesterday, I was reminded of something my mother said to me many times. At a hair stylist's shop crowded with the "ladies who lunch" prepping for a huge local social function. Suddenly the woman next to me burst into tears. Recently dumped by husband, prosperous local businessman, traded in for a trophy wife. Late forties. Kids have flown the nest. The trigger was that suddenly she realized she didn't "belong" to this group any more, no real identity except as "Mrs. X." Minimal property settlement, three years of our version of alimony, which is called something like "vocational rehabilitation" (you can go back to school and learn something to earn a living at.) Married very young, had spent a year or two at that age working retail. No work since marriage. Her only ambition had been to get married. Typical of some women in that age group. What could I do? Kleenex, a sympathetic shoulder, mentions of support groups, encouraging words. That's all.
And a silent "Thank you" to my mother, who said to me, "Nostra, always make sure that you have enough training to be able to support yourself and your children if something happens to your husband." (She never anticipated divorce, didn't happen much in her age group.)
Thanks, Mom.
