Gold is quite inert. It isn't used much anymore because it takes a good deal of time to do a gold filling. Because gold does not oxidize, it can be welded to itself relatively easily. So what the dentist does is pack in a bit of gold leaf at a time into the cavity, keeping it dry. Then the next bit that gets packed in welds to what is already there, and so on until the cavity is filled. And because gold is quite malleable, it tends to fill the entire cavity. But it takes meticulous, painstaking work to do it right.
