The aristocratic ladies were to identify the men by looking at their legs from the knees down. Not difficult in a country where a great many men wear kilts on ceremonial occasions.
The English establishment wanted to be outraged, so they were. Considering many of the other games the Brit aristocracy were playing at the time, and probably still are, that was about as serious as a game of hide and seek.
All the woman ever did was give to the man exactly the life he wanted. And stayed with him for the remainder of his life, making him happy.
