The current trend is to use amalgam where the filling is not visible and composite where it is. Amalgam is still the longest-lasting, though it's a bit harder to install in the first place. But modern composites are pretty darn good.
There are nut-case dentists who insist that amalgam is deadly poison, and make a nice living by removing all amalgam fillings and replacing them with composite. The fact is that the supposedly toxic mercury is very tightly chemically bonded to the silver in the amalgam, and doesn't float off. And metallic mercury isn't that toxic, anyway, because it's pretty inert and tends to pass through. (That is not true of some organomercury compounds, or of inhaled mercury vapor.)
