Teeth fillings...

Does your dentist use amalgam (silver colored) or composite (white) fillings? Has he/she ever discussed the pros and cons of each with you?
When I had my teeth filled, back in the seventies, the dentist used amalgam. As they needed replacing the dentist used composite. I can't remember being given a choice, it was more the white was what was being used because it looked better.
My current dentist now wants to replace all the composite ones with amalgam. He feels the white material does not fill properly, leaving space with then decays...sometimes then causing the need for root canal. This has already happened to me.
He also showed me how the amalgam is now compared to the old material where the mercury was more able to leak out of the mixture.
I'm wondering how other dentists feel about what method is best for filling teeth and why. What has your dentist told you?
