They stopped in the 70s to 90s and had a policy that you had to have 5 cases of strep in a certain amount of time to get them out because that much strep can cause heart damage. I think they started taking them out again for less severe symptoms such as excessive sore throats/ tonsilitis, but I was a child in between those years so I couldn't get mine taken out until 29 because of that strep rule. They left the adnoids, though.
