Kidney donors/recipients? Information needed

A friend has asked me to gather information about donation of kidneys from living donors. She's already researched all the usual sources, and she has asked me to inquire "on that forum thing you belong to." The proposal is that she will donate to the twenty-four year old daughter of friends who has been on dialysis for many years. But the dialysis process is becoming more difficult and causing more problems. And no donor has been forthcoming.
The recipient is an adopted child, and none of her adoptive family is a match. Initial testing indicates that the the donor and recipient are a "preliminary match."
Are there forumites who've experienced this themselves, or or who have details of the experience? She understands the process, but is seeking "I've been there" information and advice on what the personal experience itself is like. Things like "If they say six to eight weeks, but the *truth* is that it's going to be longer/shorter." "This is how it was for me." Information like that would be much appreciated.
