In a word, no

In many words, I had always assumed that I would have a career and be settled into my income bracket by the age of 30. That never happened. You could say I have a history of choosing poorly. My life is full of "if only"s. If only I had enlisted for 3 years instead of 2, I would have been able to choose my MOS instead of the Army choosing it for me. Clerk typist, what a joke. After my discharge, on a good day, after a week of practicing, my test score for a job was 11 words per minute. Needles to say, the service failed to help me get that career I was after. If only I had taken that one last history class, I would have at least earned an AA degree to put on my resume. If only my mother had been supportive of my college major, instead of going balistic when she found out it was Art. Maybe I would have stayed that course, or at the very least, continued dabbling in it in my spare time instead of dropping it all together in my struggle to take care of my kids and survive as a single parent. Not being able to find work, added to a bad marriage, kids, and divorce, didn't help me attain my goal. I freaked out when I hit 30. Hell, I didn't just hit it, I beat it to a bloody pulp! It took me a few more years, but I finally managed to obtain a student loan for career training. Not a high paying profession, but it's something I enjoy and am actually good at. I've been doing it for 21 years now. And just 2 years ago I lucked out and got a position working for the county, so I am now making more than I ever did in private practice. Still not a lot, as per the national average, but a lot to me. For the first time since I was in the Army, lo, those many years ago, I have benefits. It only took me 53 years, but I finally have medical, dental, vision, sick leave, comp time, 2 whole weeks paid vacation a year (to start!), and an actual retirement plan!!! Woo hoo!!! Another goal I had always hoped to acheive was to be able to retire at 55. Well, that hasn't happened either, but at least I have SOMETHING to look forward to now, instead of nothing. I could, if I really wanted to, retire from the county in another 3 years, with a pension. It wouldn't even be close to enough to live on, but it's still way more that I would have had otherwise. At least I feel there's a chance for me to actually retire some day. I don't feel that my goals in life haven't been achieved. It's just taken me much longer than anticipated to reach them. Guess you could say I'm a little slow on the the uptake.
