Personally, I would never play with a true sadist... but that is my own, personal preference. Some people really get off trying to please and comply with the demands of a sadist.
True sadists get very sexually aroused when administering pain. Maybe I'm parsing things a bit here. I get aroused too, but my arousal has more to do with controlling the situation. Based on your description, I'm not sure whether the person you played with is really a true sadist.
True sadists get off on giving pain and usually don't care whether the masochist is or is not satisfied.
As long as you have a safe word that is respected, you should always be fine.
My only caveat is that there's a sadist in my town who has a reputation for tying boys up and not respecting the safe word.
