In the classic 18th century novel, Fanny Hill, Fanny is reduced to being a prostitute working the London docks. A sailor comes off a ship, just back from a very long voyage. He is hornier than hell and very much in a hurry. She takes payment in advance, and he proceeds without further ado. Fanny suddenly notes that her client has entered an unexpected orifice. She tells him where he is, and he replies, "Well, any port in a storm." And that, dear friends, is the very first occurrence of that phrase in the English language. Something to think of when you use it in some other, perhaps very distant, context!
