I have never been in such a relationship, and don't plan to. I don't think I would ever find it to be what I wanted.
I used to think that they didn't make any sense. Why would you need to be with someone else besides your SO? Wouldn't that mean that you really didn't love that person? How could either of you face each other after you'd been fucking someone else?
But I talked with a woman once who was in one. She explained to me that it actually increases your love for your SO because you realize how special they are, that they'll let you do this--they will go to these ends for you to have what you want. And you know that no matter what happens with your fuck buddies, your SO will always be there for you at the end of the day. In a strange way it actually amplifies your relationship, rather than diminishes it.
It took me a little while, but I grew to understand what she was getting at. Still not for me, but I do appreciate why and how people can conduct their love lives this way.
