Re: Debunking the myths of open relationships
|
| |
I don't want to end up repeating what others have said so here are just a couple of thoughts on a couple of these myths.
Myth #3. People in open relationships are promiscuous. Myth #5. Open relationships are all about sex. Why is sex not a good enough reason for having a relationship and what is wrong with seeking a lot of sex with different people (if that is what is meant by the admonitory "promiscuous"). If that is what some people in open relationships are doing -- and it is patently not all -- then good for them. Sex is a form of communion/communication with another, no more or less trivial than a friendship based on a mutual love of films and theatre, shopping, going to baseball games, or whatever.
Myth #6. Open relationships trivialize marriage. Marriage is an institution that is well worth trivialising. Given how absurdly over-valued and over-praised marriage is, the more necessary it becomes to knock it from its pedestal as THE model for human relationships. Trivialising marriage may be something that makes open relationships so necessary.
