Education is essential

Consider the following historical myths:
#1 - Blacks are inferior to Whites.
#2 - Women are not smart enough to be able to vote.
#3 - Gays have sex with animals.
#4 - Atheists have no morals.
At various times in history, each of these myths has predominated, mainly due to ignorance. It takes education and experience to debunk them. People who are raised in communities where myths like these are held as truths, generally grow up believing them - until they become educated and/or gain experience that teaches them otherwise.
Lifestyle choices are no different. People who are raised in communities that believe the myths you listed about open marriage are going to believe them until they become educated about alternatives and until they meet people who actually live the lifestyle successfully and lead by example.
I will go out on a limb here and say that there are people on this forum who have changed their opinions about open marriage because they've learned from members of this community, and because they've talked with others who have successful nontraditional marriages.
I know that I am a good example of that. 10 years ago I knew almost nothing about open marriage, and if asked back then, I think I would have stated your Myth #1 - that "open marriage" is just an excuse to cheat. I no longer believe that because I've read quite a lot about open marriage, and I've talked to others who experience it successfully. I am no longer ignorant about the subject. Having explored aspects of the lifestyle myself, I can now speak from a different perspective.
The key to debunking ANY myth is to educate people about the truth so that they can see the myth for what it is. The more they are exposed to the truth, the more likely it is that they will come to understand.
