That futball guy
|

How about that football guy Brent Favre. HE puts the "r" before the "v" when he says it. It surprises me that he doesn't pronounce his first name as "bret-en".
It has always amused me that people can spell and/or pronounce their name any way they do, spelling notwithstanding. I'm waiting for someone to say "My name is Smith, J-O-N-E-S."
Names are sometimes spelled the way the guy at Ellis Island herad it. My grandmother's NAME was Celia, but the guy on Ellis Island HEARD Sylvia, so that's what he wrote. She was very proud of her "new, American name", so she used Sylvia. Later, we tried to get it changed on her papers, but the hassle wasn't worth the outcome, so we left it alone. Birth certificates, especially from 1880's Italy, aren't very reliable, IF you can find one.
Some in my family were legally screwed out of inheritance in Italy because of the name change.
