In St Louis it depends on who you ask; if you ask a hoosier Goethe is is pronounced Goth (rhymes with both), if you ask someone who has a German background it's pronounced Gerta.
This can be a pain in the ass since it's a street name and very few people looking for a street named Gerta would realize that they keep missing the turn every time they pass the street sign that says Goethe.
