Re: HIV

I have many friends who are HIV+. Some of them deeply resent the disease and its complications. They occasionally are impatient with anyone who does not share their status. The meds keep them alive but do strange things to their bodies and to their minds and their perspective. It is very difficult to understand what a man goes through when his entire life is upset and redirected and hobbled by a permanent and unpredictable disease. You learn to be extremely patient and more indulgent with those friends than with perhaps your other friends who by comparison have less to handle. You learn to expect that plans you made on Monday with your friend may be canceled on Tuesday because there is no way for him to anticipate how he will feel when he wakes up. Yes, you learn to be very patient, and sometimes, when they are able to, they climb up out of their bitterness and unlock the old man, the one you became friends with, and you wish those moments would last, but they do not. It's a roller coaster that you will someday exit through one door, and he through another.
