Seriously, the obsure organizations that you've never heard of make lots of money from this kind of stuff. For example, there have been at least a dozen anti-gay marriage initiatives proposed by organizations in California in the past two years. But only one has qualified. Most have simply been devices to do fundraising. They were never really intended to go anywhere. (The one that will appear on the ballot this year will do so only because a very few individuals and entities ponied up a million and a half bucks to buy signatures). The other "scams" did fundraising, but never spent anything really trying to accomplish anything.
If the organization in the NYT were something like the Knights of Columbus (which is active in the anti-gay marriage meovement) or a particular diocese or order of priests, that would be different.
But my guess is this is simply a forum for scam fundraising...
Just my personal view.
