Re: I'm confused

As I understand it, the ministers -- a Unitarian minister in particular -- will perform the ceremony using the language of the civil ceremony rather than whatever ceremony they usually use. In California, anyone who wishes to can easily qualify to become an official performer of marriages. In fact, yesterday in Santa Clara County 75 volunteers showed up for training to help out the county clerk, who figured she would be swamped when gay marriages become legal in a few days. She had issued a call for volunteers and had expected maybe 20 people to show up. She was astounded and delighted when 75 showed up instead. I have a friend who actually makes a small living performing secular marriage ceremonies. She is a Humanist (with a capital H) and for a modest fee will show up at any desired place to perform a ceremony either as she has written it or (within reason) as the happy couple have written it.
