If countyyclerks can charge whatever fee they want there is no way they can justify that performing marriages is too expensive. Especially if they're allowed to charge enough to make a profit.
But since they are arguing it's too expensive (and gay marriages cost exactly the same) then it's also too expensive to marry straight folks. So rather than marry everyone as the law requires they'll find a way to refuse to marry gay folks that will in turn mean they can't marry straight ones either. So they lose whatever part of their revenue came from marriages.
And even though county clerks are the only ones who can usually do courthouse weddings they'll have to oblige themselves of the ministers willing to marry everyone. The gay people still get married, the county loses out on the revenue & in general certain counties look like they're being run by cousin fucking inbreds who live in double wides.
