That was in Salon.Com, as well, and I responded that I used to get rashes from "sandpaper faces," back when I was a teen and had not yet learned to be more self-assertive about such things.
Back then, stubble wasn't "fashionable"; it's just that many men shave in the morning and don't realize how much their whiskers might have grown out during the course of the day.
No one, for the record, seemed to take offense when I suggested a second shave prior to going out on a date. (One guy even thanked me for cluing him in about that, when I ran into him several decades later.)
Well, we can always count on some troll who hates even mildly-assertive women, because one respondent said that he doubted that I was good-looking enough to be such a "micromanaging bitch." Then he sarcked, "Don't they make a lotion for that?" (meaning, I presume, my post-necking facial rash). I don't suppose it's quite the reaction he imagined he'd get from me, but I have to say that I LOVE the phrase "micro-managing bitch," and that if I didn't have plenty of other good handles already in use, I'd adopt it immediately.
