There will always be differences of opinion about the appropriateness of a punishment for a particular crime.
As I recall, Fay vandalized several cars. Is four strokes of the cane appropriate? Again, that will depend how you feel about inflicting physical pain as punishment. If I was in his shoes, I might have chosen that punishment over a jail term. At least it was over quickly, and he'd have some scars to tell his grandkids war stories about.
Perhaps, a more appropriate punishment would have been to work off the cost of the damage by forced labor.
Either way, I bet he'd have thought twice about vandalism again.
